2:30pm Sketch

This is a little sketch that was supposed to grow into a two-page spread in my sketchbook, but I pulled the plug on it...in fact I was not gonna even publish it here. I'm in the mood for Spring Clear-out so here it is (there's more to come).

This sketch started a weeks ago. I was having a coffee in the shopping mall and I caught a glimpse of this girl having a coffee. She was dressed in typical urban style (facial piercings, big earrings, etc.), really enjoying her music and having a good time. At the moment I kept a mental note of her enthusiasm, cleared my table and left.

Later on that day, I heard in the news that a young girl was shot to death in front of a takeaway here in London.

The people I was with started to speculate that she was probably up to no good, that it was probably drugs or she was two-timing. I thought these comments are stupid because people are quick to judge based on stereotypes, and they were in fact - Turns out the girl was an innocent bystander caught in the line of fire.

As a result, I decided to sketch something as a tribute to the poor innocent girl, to enthusiasm, life and against stereotypes and people's prejudice.

Please give everyone a chance for who they are, and embrace difference: there is a lot to learn from people of different walks of life.
