Abandon All Hope by mitengu Abandon All Hope by mitengu
In this illustration we have Aphrodite, lingering in Limbo: the place between the world of the living and the land of the dead.

Limbo exists in the same space we inhabit while living, but it is a dimension that is vibrating beyond the visible spectrum; very much like infrared radiation.

Aphrodite can see the roses but to much frustration, cannot feel them.

Aphrodite is (c) of Masaaimi Kurumada/Toei, the afterlife is not.

Oh, Dead bride... Aphrodite really looks like a zombie here. The net of a thorn that's done by roses' wilts only addsto the atmosphere. You can feel his suffocating pain from the fact he is so close and yet, so far away from them. Very beautiful.

First of all, thanks for your effusive replies, I really like getting feedback with substance!

My concept with this set is to portray them in Limbo/Hades as spectres, that's why they look so ghastly. I think my inspiration for this piece was wanting something so bad but not being able to achieve it.

Thanks a lot :D

Oh, but you're most welcomeXD A good art deserves a good feedback.

Welcome^^

if I hadn't read your notes, right now I'd be asking you if Aphrodite is talking to the caterpillar of the branch about how unfair life is XD

it's a very dramatic picture, but it's so beautiful...

Thank you amiga :D

Yeah, i'll give Kurumada his credits (or Toei, whoever owns the characters), but my craziness is only mine :D You 've got a cool gallery yourself...

yes... a real spanish girl! lol

I just felt curious because of your name and that 'amiga' in your former reply.

and about my skills, I've been learning english with English teachers since I was 5 (my parents wanted me to speak at least two foreign languages) so now I can speak and write fluent english. I hope not to seem too pretentious lol

Excelente!

My brother lives in Madrid and teaches English somewhere (forgot where!). Be proud of your English skills, it's quite rare for Spanish people to be so fluent! I am impressed! cool gallery BTW :D

Have a great Easter ;) (here in London is Easter)

I love the mix of life and death in this picture. It shows through at every level and in every part.

The figure, Aphrodite, combines these twin ideas with her expressive features and her pale, dead, skin. Her outfit also shows the duality, with the dragons tails on her bracers and the way in which her shoulder plating looks like a skull. The two sides of her cloak are another example, with bright flowers and leaves contrasted against plain black.

Elsewhere in the picture the rose bush, which has often been used to show the good (blossoms) and bad (thorns) side of things, also has the images of the black and white roses and the caterpillar contrasted against the empty spider's web.
The ruins in the background seem to speak only of death, but even there small plants can be seen sprouting among the scattered stones.

I like the way you've shown the wistfulness in her eyes and pose, and the way you've shown beauty in the crumbling things and death in the beautiful things. You've done a great job with this picture and, to my mind, you've captured the idea of limbo beautifully.

Nice illustration. The thin lines and low saturated colors in the background to show some depth worked well in this. And I liked the way you colored the roses.

much frustration on my part coz my laptop is evil and won't let me fave anyone's work! >8[

it's a beautiful work, i really like her expression and the concept. it's a very different aphrodite from the usual and i like that you've strayed from the nearly absolute cliche

and the colour scheme - i really like the warmth. it also seems to deviate from the usual in limbo schemes of whites and greys or blue that i know of. also, the volcano which i think represents the underworld also makes me think that the underworld is a place of heated hell. i like it =] no weird contrasts of the cold underworld environment with supposedly blue-hot flames ^^

haha and i'm writing too much xD but it's great, is what i really wanted to say =]

Thank you very, very much for the review, better than a fav.

I really like that you appreciate the details. I have always imagined Limbo as a twilight. My main inspiration was pictures of Mars: I wanted to capture that barren quality.

I went through your gallery and I really like the lady with the fan. Beautiful!

Take care!

hehe no worries ^^

and wow, mars! haha, it's interesting that you use it because of the link between the mythological gods and the astrological names that the romans (i think xD) gave them. i forget which star/planet aphrodite was... hm... =]

and thankyou very much for the fave and the compliment ^^ i was actually hoping to edit that piece (by doing lineart with a tablet rather than the pen tool) but i'm not too sure that i can be bothered xD

Thanks! I think Aphrodite corresponds to Venus. I didn't think that deep about it, I just thought how would it feel to be in a completely alien place...

You should give a try at editing it, see what happens! :) I never tried the tablet, I should give it a go sometimes!

haha in that case i seem to have overthought that xD mah bad.

and i would like to try to edit it, but i have a major assignment
for art so i'm trying to put as much of my own personal stuff on hold >____> it didn't work too well in the 1st two weeks
back at school
so i'm trying my hardest now to stay away from PS xD

and yes! get a drawing tablet! it's amazing and fun and and...amazing! ^^ makes everything so much easier...
